You can also use your Akaun Sejahtera to pay for life and critical illness cover through i-Lindung, and to pay your monthly housing loan.

Most of us think of EPF as money that’s locked away until we turn 55. That’s mostly true. But there are a few official ways EPF can help you before 55, and if you’re planning to retire early, you really should know them.

Photo: Gunung Kinabalu, Sabah

Hack 1: Cross the RM1 million+ mark and take out the extra

EPF Withdrawal before 55 if I have more than RM1 million?

Yes. If you’re below 55 and your total EPF savings go above the threshold, you can withdraw the amount above it, either partly or in full.

The threshold goes up by RM100,000 a year:

2026: RM1.1 million

2027: RM1.2 million

2028: RM1.3 million

EPF gives a simple example. If you have RM1.15 million in 2026, you can withdraw RM50,000.

Early Retirement Planning using EPF

Say you reach RM1.3 million. Every year, EPF pays you a dividend on that money. Using a careful 5.8% (just under EPF’s average yearly return of 5.88% over the past 10 years), that’s about RM75,400 a year, or roughly RM6,280 a month.

If you are on Simpanan Shariah? Its 10-year average is a bit lower at 5.60%, which works out to about RM72,800 a year.

That dividend lands on top of your RM1.3 million, so it sits above the threshold and you can withdraw it. Your RM1.3 million stays in EPF and keeps earning.

Is RM6,280 a month enough? For someone with fewer commitments, like a paid-off house or grown-up kids, it can be. Your own monthly spending decides.

Good to know

Dividends are paid once a year, so treat this as a yearly payout, not a monthly salary.

The threshold has gone up every year. It might go up again after 2028, so check KWSP’s page each year.

Past dividends don’t promise future ones. Some years will pay less.

You can apply through the KWSP i-Akaun app, the i-Akaun website or any EPF branch.

The hard part? Getting to that number in the first place. But once you’re there, EPF can become the backbone of your early retirement.

Sources: KWSP – Withdrawal for Savings Above RM1 Million

Hack 2: Let EPF pay for your life and critical illness cover

Can I use EPF to pay for insurance? Yes. Through i-Lindung in the KWSP i-Akaun app, members below 55 can use their Akaun Sejahtera to buy life and critical illness cover from EPF-approved insurers and takaful operators.

Why this matters for early retirement

One critical illness can wipe out years of savings. And once you quit your job, your company insurance usually goes with it. Protecting yourself is a big part of any early retirement plan.

If EPF pays the premium, your cash stays invested and keeps working for you.

What you can get

Life cover: pays out if you pass away or become totally and permanently disabled.

Critical illness cover: pays out if you’re diagnosed with a critical illness like a heart attack, stroke or cancer.

Family cover: you can add your spouse and children, as long as you cover yourself too.

Good to know

No medical check-up. You just answer a few simple health questions, all done online in the KWSP i-Akaun app.

You pay once a year, and it renews automatically as long as you have enough in your Akaun Sejahtera.

It’s pure protection. If you never claim, you don’t get money back.

This is not a medical card or medical insurance. It doesn’t cover your hospital bills. You still need a separate medical plan, especially after you leave your job.

Critical illness cover has a waiting period before it kicks in.

Premiums paid this way can qualify for tax relief.

You can only buy these plans through i-Lindung, not through an agent.

Source: KWSP – i-Lindung

Hack 3: Use EPF to pay your monthly housing loan

Can I use EPF to pay my monthly mortgage? Yes. With the Housing Loan Instalment Withdrawal, you can use your Akaun Sejahtera to pay your monthly housing loan, up until you turn 55.

EPF Housing Loan Instalment Withdrawal for FIRE

Your house loan is probably your biggest monthly bill. If it’s RM2,000 a month, that’s RM24,000 a year you don’t have to pay from your own pocket. Less spending means you need less money to retire.

A simple example

Say you have RM150,000 in your Akaun Sejahtera and your instalment is RM2,000 a month. That covers about 6 years of house payments. The money waiting to be paid out still earns dividends, which go back into your Akaun Sejahtera.

Good to know

Only the money in your Akaun Sejahtera counts, not your total EPF savings.

Monthly payments stop when you turn 55.

It’s for one home per member.

Source: KWSP – Housing Loan Instalment Withdrawal

Conclusion: EPF isn’t just for when you’re 55

EPF is built for old age. But if you use it smartly, it can help your early retirement too:

Cross the threshold and withdraw the extra each year.

Use i-Lindung to cover yourself for life and critical illness without touching your cash.

Use the housing withdrawal to cut your biggest monthly bill.

One last thing: every ringgit you take out of EPF stops growing at EPF’s dividend rate. So use these withdrawals for things that cut your spending or protect you from big risks. Use it with care, it’s your hard earned money!

Bottom line? EPF should be one part of your early retirement plan, not the whole plan.

Need help planning your FIRE Malaysia with EPF?

Everyone’s numbers are different.
